CHAPTER 21: A NEW ENEMY

At the words “enemy species,” the mechanical dragon stiffened.

Electricity pulsated through the creature’s body, and then a pair of lights lit up on the glass covering the brain. The eyes were made of small flickering green lights, reminding me of small LEDs.

“Correct. We are your competitors in the great game,” the dragon replied. It had a very nerdy-sounding technical voice, almost like it was quickly reading out information. Though the words it used were actually simple and plain, even normal words sounded like jargon because of how fast it was speaking.

As it spoke, various metal flaps and panels opened and closed on the creature’s body, revealing its internal wiring and tubing. The same sewer-green fluid that the creature’s brain was bathed in was pumped throughout its body.

At first glance, I’d thought that the creature was a cyborg, but other than the large brain, there were no biological parts whatsoever…unless that strange sewer water was its version of blood or spinal fluid. It reminded me a little of the vat, the one Parfanel always wound up in…

“I’m guessing you got here with that System gem?” I asked.

“Correct,” the dragon replied. “We are an advanced party. We decided to come right away to get a measure of humanity.”

“I see,” I replied.

My heart was pounding in my chest. Just common sense—and the System’s messages—told me that our future opponents were far more powerful than the darkling or dwergar. The fact that they’d come into our village was very bad news.

But I forced myself to think through things calmly and rationally. Something strange was afoot here. The creature had entered our territory when we were in the tower, but it hadn’t attacked anybody.

Not only that, it seemed like people couldn’t even see it in the first place. I glanced past it, looking towards the larger town. Sarah and Linda were chatting calmly together, walking towards the tavern. One of the new women we’d invited—I couldn’t remember her name, but I remembered her face and chestnut hair from some of the parties—was walking towards the well.

She suddenly stiffened as she saw us, bowing her head.

“Hey, Devin! And Emma! And Ben! And…”

She kept listing off our names, not realizing the monster that was standing there. As she spoke, the dragon suddenly stiffened again.

“Ah. So, one of you is Devin?” it asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “What is…”

“They cannot see me,” the dragon said matter-of-factly. “Our mage cast a cloaking spell on us, so only players level thirty or higher can see us.”

“Alright then.”

In a way, the dragon’s refusal to attack regular civilians, especially when cloaked, at least increased my respect for it. There was a clear difference between this odd robot and the brutal darkling.

Because of the circumstances of the Demigod’s great game, we were enemies, but had it tried massacring my villagers, I would have tried killing it on the spot. It was at least worth hearing out.

“So, what do you want?” I asked.

“We are looking for the following humans,” the dragon chirped. “Devin Cain.
